For the upcoming production GRIT, by INTER-ACTIONS – The Dance Company, choreographer Edan Gorlicki is looking for 1-3 professional dancers.

About the project:
GRIT is a hybrid performance combining Step Aerobics and contemporary theater.
When placing the body in the context of commercialism and corporate profit within the fitness industry, as a project, GRIT questions what the role of the body is in a capitalist society? What is the currency of the body under the umbrella of health and wellness? Who is benefiting from the act of working out at a gym? What is body positivity, what is body negativity, and how vulnerable are we when it comes to our body’s participation in daily life? GRIT physically embraces the relationship between effort and pleasure. How much energy is spent in comparison to how much is gained. In this context, GRIT focuses just as much on the experience of fun, play, pleasure and joy as it does on physical effort.

Expectation of performers:
GRIT will require dancers to perform the activity of step aerobics for the full duration of the performance. The choreography will consist of fast footwork to complex rhythms in contact with a step. Dancers must be highly musical and skilled at counting music and choreographic steps.

Nature of creative process:
Our creative process will consist of step training, a lot of improvising both physically and theatrically, setting material, having many conceptual discussions, weekly engagements with local communities of non-professional dancers and experts in the field of Step Aerobics and fitness training. Our performances often include audience participation and interaction. We see our performances as a shared event by audience and performers alike.

Rehearsal period:
Block 1: 10.07.23 – 21.07.23 (July 10th, – July 21st, 2023)
Block 2: 14.08.23 – 25.08.23 (August 14th, – August 25th, 2023)
Block 3: 11.09.23 – 20.10.23 (September 11th, – October 20th, 2023)

Confirmed Performance dates:
21.10.23 Premiere (October 21st, 2023)
27. & 28.10.23 (October 27th & 28th, 2023)
Further performance dates till July 2024 are still to be negotiated with selected cast

Fee: € 7,500 (brutto) calculated in accordance with the current national fee recommendations.
Fee is including all rehearsal days and 1 performance.
Travels during the creation process and performances are fully covered
We are only looking for artists based living within the Metropolregion Rhein-Neckar. Therefore, the company will not provide or cover any accommodation

Who can apply:
– Professional dancers of all races, genders, ages, body types and backgrounds.
– Artists must be able to travel and be physically present in person on the day of the audition.
– Artists must be based living within the Rhein-Neckar Region or within daily travel distance from Heidelberg.
– Artists must be enthusiastic about performing step aerobics and working with local communities of non-professional dancers.
– Artists must be fully available for all dates mentioned.
– Artists must be professional freelancers with an existing german tax number that allows them to write invoices, KSK members, based living and working in Germany with a valid German working permit from the audition date till, at least, May 2024.

The Audition:
The audition will consist of a guided warm up, an introduction to step aerobics, improvisational and theatrical tasks. More detailed information about the audition day will be provided via email in response to the application
