In this workshop dancers will begin with a ballet class, paying specific attention to how ballet can be used as a tool for pursuing larger dance ideas. Following ballet, dancers will be led through improvisation and repertory designed to emphasize agency, presence, and rigorous physicality. Spenser’s work as a choreographer and educator is centered around the concept of active participation, and the classes and choreography he develops promotes engagement in process over product, ultimately leading to greater clarity, interpretation, and ownership of the material. Over these three weeks, dancers can expect to be challenged physically and mentally in a supportive environment, as well as receive new tools to expand their understanding and strengthen their point of view, both of which are essential for a sustainable career in today’s contemporary dance landscape.
