The Tanz.Transformator project of Beatrix Cultural Center, based in Skopje, North Macedonia, is looking for an international choreographer to lead a three-day dance intensive and a one-month (25 working days) production-oriented residency, which includes a national tour to show the resulting production in Skopje and two other cities.

Where: Skopje, North Macedonia

When: 15 August to 15 September 2023

Deadline for applications: Monday 01 May 2023, 11:59 CET

The Tanz.Transformator project aims to enhance the employability of talented dancers and to increase the visibility and recognition of the dance community in North Macedonia. The project is supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.

Tanz.Transformator offers a unique opportunity to international choreographers to travel to Skopje to work with ambitious professional dancers and emerging young talents to develop a production and to present the production in Skopje and two other cities in August/September 2023.

The selected choreographer will lead a three-day dance intensive workshop (4 hours/day), for which approximately 30 participants will be selected through an open call. On the last day of the dance intensives, the choreographer will select seven participants for the subsequent residency.
During the one-month production-oriented residency, the choreographers will work with the seven selected dancers, who will be paid a fee for their participation, to develop a production of 45 – 60 minutes. A costume designer, light designer and a music composer will be available.
At the end of the residency, the production will be performed in Skopje and in the main theatres of two other cities during a national tour. Each performance will be followed by artists’ talks with the choreographer and the ensemble. If additional project funding is secured, the production will also be part of an international tour and/or a dance festival in Skopje.

Tanz.Transformator pays special attention to social engagement and critical awareness of the dancers and the audience. It is a plus if choreographers work with themes such as women’s rights, gender-based violence, youth mental health, climate change or environmental challenges.

This is a paid opportunity and the choreographers will receive a gross-amount honorarium of 2300 EUR for their engagement. Tanz.Transformator covers the international travel costs from the airport (or international railway/bus station) of departure to Skopje, North Macedonia and back. Tanz.Transformator will also provide accommodation, a modest per diem and local (intercity) transport during the residence.
