Developed by Anouk van Dijk, Countertechnique® offers dancers practical tools to navigate the physical and mental demands of contemporary dance. The practice focuses on integrating information directly into action, supporting efficiency, clarity, and responsiveness in movement.
A key principle of the technique is the continuous use of directions and counter-directions, training both awareness and application throughout the class. Dancers are introduced progressively to the tools, with an emphasis on physical experience rather than intellectual understanding. The approach encourages autonomy, inviting dancers to actively explore connections and find solutions within their own practice.
The workshop is structured in two parts: a Countertechnique® warm-up based on a recurring set of exercises, and a second section dedicated to deeper exploration of its principles through improvisation and guided research, with a focus on shifting attention while moving.
Elita Cannata (Italy, 1985) is based in Amsterdam and has been working with Countertechnique since 2005. She performed with anoukvandijk dc in 2007–2008 and completed the Countertechnique Teacher Training (CTTT) in 2014, becoming a Senior Teacher in 2018 with the support of the Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst. Since 2021, she has been part of the CTTT faculty, contributing to the training of future teachers.
She regularly teaches in higher education institutions and professional companies across Europe, including Skanes Danstheater, Goteborgdanskompani, Nederlands Dans Theater, Academie voor Theater en Dans, and Henny Jurriens Studio. She graduated from Codarts Rotterdam Dance Academy in 2007.
