Workshop with Gentian Doda from Staatsballett Berlin

Where: to Art Factory International, Via della Casa Buia 4/A, Bologna 40129 Italy

When: from 09 to 12 March 2017

“A WORD does not start as a WORD – it is an end product which begins as an impulse, stimulated by attitude and behavior which dictates the need for expression.” This quote by Peter Brook, one of Britian’s most respected and visionary theatrical directors, sums up the goal of this workshop except WORD is replaced by MOVEMENT. Therefore, movement will be approached and transformed from various angles leaving space for individual proposals and needs. The research will be based on selected choreographies of Nacho Duato as well as Gentian Doda´s own repertoire. Form, quality, structure and the relationship between space and time will be analyzed with the use of different tools aiming to provoke movement through the organization of these elements.Born in Tirana in 1978, he began his career with the Albania´s National Theater of Opera and Ballet. This was followed by the Azerbaijan StateTheater of Opera and Ballet, Teatro Arena di Verona, Balletto di Parma and Compañía de la Comunidad de Madrid directed by Victor Ullate. During this period he performed a vast range of principal roles in classical repertoire as well as in various international galas. In 2002 he was invited by Maurice Béjart to interpret the lead role in Firedbird with the Ballet Lausanne. In 2003 he became a member of Compañía Nacional de Danza (C.N.D), directed by Nacho Duato, where he performed most of the renowned choreographer’s repertoire, as well as other works by Ohad Naharin, William Forsythe, Jiri Kylian, Orjan Anderson, Mats Ek and Wim Vandekeybus, among others.

He initiated choreography when he created Nuk e di and Korridor (2005) for the choreographic workshops at C.N.D. He was later commissioned Axis (2006) and Sin lo cual no (2007) for CND2 and shortly after created Us vs. (2008). Gentian’s work received continued support from Nacho Duato who invited him to do two pieces for the main company, De paso (2009) and Aksak (2010). In 2011, Gentian collaborated with Dimo Kirilov to create 1/2 waltz and was awarded First Choreography Prize in the Copenhagen and Hanover contests, as well as the Scapino Production Prize. This was followed by a new collaboration, S.O.S which premiered in Madrid en Danza Festival.
In 2012 he created Fragmentum II and Nameless for the New York Choreographic Institute in collaboration with dancers from New York City Ballet and composers from the Julliard School of Music. During this same year he created 34 in Copenhagen in collaboration with other international artists, and participated in an independent project with Beijing Dance Company. In 2013, he choreographed two solos A NA and KJAJ and premiered a new creation KHA for Scapino Ballet. In March 2014 he premiered SONN with Ballet Nacional Dominicano. He continues performing, creating in different independent projects, galas and international workshops, as well as assisting and setting Nacho Duato´s ballets worldwide. In August 2014 he becomes first ballet Master of the Staatsballet Berlin.
