Tero Saarinen Company’s summer intensive 2018, with a special focus on Saarinen’s choreographic work and repertoire!
Where: Alexander Theatre, Helsinki, Finland
When: 13–17 August 2018
Deadline for applications: 15 June (for a minimum amount of participants)
TSC’s summer intensive 2018 focuses on Tero Saarinen’s choreographic work. Like all TERO Intensives, the five-day course gives a comprehensive overview of TERO Technique and the philosophy behind it. This year’s special emphasis is in Saarinen’s repertoire. Participants will have a unique chance to immerse themselves in Tero Saarinen’s choreographies. Extensive repertoire exercises will feature scenes not only from Saarinen’s old creations but also new, never-seen-before movement material! Participants will get to participate in Saarinen’s choreographic process, as he is working on a new large-scale creation, set to premiere in 2019.
The summer intensive 2018 will be led by Tero Saarinen and TSC’s Head of Artistic Development Sini Länsivuori. The course is aimed at professional dancers and students finishing their professional training.
TERO Technique stems from awakening the senses, recognising the weight of one’s body, and maximising the use of both balance and off-balance. Tero Saarinen’s distinctive style fuses elements from his backgrounds in ballet, contemporary dance, and a wide range of Asian traditions. The style has been described as “an inventive mixture of grotesqueness and beauty”, “organic”, and “butoh with wings”.
The aim of Tero Saarinen’s technique is to activate every cell and nerve ending in the body, to become fully Aware, Alert, Attentive, and Alive – 360 degrees present and resonating. The goal is to make full use of each dancer’s technical knowledge and explore, liberate, and further nourish the potential of each individual. This leads to interpretations that are constantly surprising and vital to our existence, like flora and fauna.
