Deadline for applications: May 11, 2018
Sans Souci Festival of Dance Cinema is a niche film festival specializing in films that integrate the aesthetics of dance and cinema. Based in Boulder, CO, we’ve been screening films in our hometown, across the United States, and around the world since 2004. Our mission is to promulgate this emerging art form by developing an audience and hence supporting our contributing artists.
The integration dance and cinematography is the heart of our work. When choosing works for exhibition and installation, we consider thoughtful forms and themes, investigative / innovative / experimental approaches, production values, audience appeal, choreographic creativity, virtuosic performance, and program fit. None of these criteria is a must; none is more important than the others; excellence in any one or two areas may be sufficient for acceptance. Shorts are preferred; documentaries and animations will be considered. Note that we are not interested in simple recordings of dance on a proscenium stage — cinematic elements must be an integral part of the entry. We encourage submissions from all artists regardless of credentials and affiliations.
THIS IS OUR 15th ANNIVERSARY SEASON! Sans Souci will sponsor screenings at the University of Colorado at Boulder’s ATLAS Blackbox Theatre September 14-15, and also exhibit accepted works at the Boedecker Theater at Dairy Arts Center and other venues later in the fall.
This year we will primarily be screening dance shorts of 16 minutes or less. While the length limit is 40 minutes, the films we do screen at that length tend to be dance documentaries. We are most interested in dance films that integrate the aesthetics of dance and film and are an appropriate length in relationship to their treatment and style.
