Workshop Repertoire Sasha Waltz – 13th “Dance Days Chania” International Contemporary Dance Festival.

In this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to experience the repertoire of Sasha Waltz and Guests company.
The workshop starts with a guided group warm-up focused on the relationship between breath, movement, and energy, then we dive into the spatial game and choreographic language of the “In C” system, exploring improvisation tools, different movement phrases, and qualities. Participants will learn how to interconnect the information that comes purely from practicing improvisation principles and given choreographic language.
What is “In C”?
In 2021, the dance company Sasha Waltz & Guests began an artistic process that resulted in the ongoing production of both digital and live formats. Terry Riley’s “In C” (1964) forms the musical basis for this production. “In C” is an experimental, constantly evolving process as well as a dialogue between dance, music and space. The score of “In C” consists of fifty-three musical phrases and reads like stage instructions to the musicians. The idea of translating these detailed instructions into dance through a choreographic exploration of the music appealed to the company. The result is an experimental system of fifty-three choreographic figures for structured improvisation with clear rules. “In C” is also a very democratic score: it is a piece about being part of a group as an individual rather than being an individual within a group.

BIO:
Melissa Figueiredo (BR) is a dance artist, movement practitioner, educator & choreographer based in Berlin.
She holds a degree in contemporary dance education from the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) – Brazil and the FUNCEB school. She went through different technical training in Ballet, Modern Dance, Brazilian Folk dance, and different approaches of Floorwork and improvisation. Melissa has collaborated as a dancer with many choreographers and since 2021 she’s collaborating on creative projects with the artist Edivaldo Ernesto and working with the company Sasha Waltz and Guests in Berlin. She works as a co-director of the collective Nii/Colaboratório (BR) directing creative projects with an emphasis on physicality, visual narrative, and sci-fi. Her own choreographic and audiovisual projects have been staged in Brazil, Mexico, France, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Germany, Nicaragua, and Paraguay.
