Open call for solo dancers for the 8th edition of En Chair et en Son festival, international meetings of dance and acousmatic music, taking place in Paris from 22 to 26 November 2023.

The festival “En Chair et en Son”, founded in 2015 in Paris, creates annual meetings between acousmatic music composers and dancers. It is organised by AEA (Aventures Electro Acoustiques association) and MOTUS compagnie musicale.
We are looking for dancers and performers of any form of physical expression : contemporary dance, butoh, performance, physical theater… We only accept solo performers and we cannot consider group proposals.
After an open call the festival’s selection committee chooses separately 15 composers and 15 dancers. Each composer proposes a musical work already created for an acousmonium concert. The duration of the work shall be more than 15 minutes. Dancers and composers are mutually choosing each other through a specific “matching procedure”. The dancers are then invited to create a solo performance on the composers’ selected musical works. The composers have the possibility to slightly modify their work after discussing with the dancers, but they cannot totally change the musical piece. During the festival the selected musical works are interpreted live at the Acousmonium of Motus Musical Company, an installation of 30 sound speakers. Each dancer performs his/her solo in the middle of this Acousmonium installation, immersed into the sound.

The festival is open to both experienced and young artists’ proposals.
It exists some possibility of offering a rehearsal space to the artists living in Paris throughout the year, or in Aleph Theater the week before the festival, from the 13th to the19th of November 2023.
The selection committee is particularly interested in the motivation expressed by the artists to work in a spirit of “meeting and exploration” between acousmatic music and dance and will give priority to artists who have not yet worked together in the past.
The intention of these meetings is to promote the emergence of new ways of creation and collaboration between dance and music.
“Matching” procedure
The selection of the artists, dancers and composers, will be completed by June 18th, 2023.
The selection committee will be the interface allowing dancers and composers to meet each other.
The dancers will be given access to all selected musical works in a dedicated file, and the composers will be given access to all dancers’ video links. They will then have 15 days to make their choice of a “partner”, constituting a list by priority order of their “favorites”. The committee will propose the “pairs”.
By the 1st of July 2023, all pairs should be constituted.
Funding
The festival is self-funded. However we often manage to get some public funding which allows us to cover the artists’ transportation and accommodation expenses and sometimes offer a fee for their performance. This possibility will be confirmed later on depending on the result of our fundraising campaign.
How to apply:
Please submit via an online video platform (youtube, vimeo,…) an extract or a full performance of yours, indicative of your artistic identity, along with an intention note written in English or French (text, word, NOT PDF), explaining your motivation to participate to the festival and to collaborate with composers of acousmatic music.
