Johnny McMillan’s work explores the body as a site of transformation, combining physical rigor with performative and experiential research. His practice is informed by contemporary ballet, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a strong focus on presence, intensity, and embodied states.
Born in Canada, McMillan is a dancer and choreographer based in Berlin. Graduating
from Interlochen Arts Academy, he began dancing with Hubbard Street 2 and was later
promoted to Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. During that time, he co-founded an
interdisciplinary performance arts collective, The Rainbow Body Project, that focused on
transformative experience through personal excavation. Leaving Chicago, McMillan
joined The Royal Swedish Ballet as part of the contemporary division and made a similar
move to Staatsballett Berlin. Independently, he worked with Gleich Dances, Sasha Waltz
and Guests, and Jefta van Dinther. McMillan is currently a freelance artist and member of
Sharon Eyal Dance (SED).
