OPEN CALL FOR DANCERS, MUSICIANS & DJS

In the theater world, particularly in Austria, classical and contemporary dance as well as music tend to take precedence. Recognizing this, artistic directors Farah Deen and Olivia Mitterhuemer view it as their responsibility to support professional artists from street and club cultures, providing them with a platform and amplifying their visibility within theater spaces. This mission drives the creation of the dance theater evening ‘Flavourama Performatory,’ now in its third edition.

— We are seeking street and club dancers (Hip Hop, House, Popping, Locking, Waacking, Voguing, Breaking, and related styles), as well as musicians and DJs specializing in related musical genres, in solo, duo, or trio constellations. The call is for artists who are interested in the exploration of their performative skills and in opening new creative spaces. —

In response to ongoing dialogues and a growing demand, notably from various festivals and choreographers, to integrate styles such as hip hop, house dance, or breaking into theater contexts, different artists will be selected to open new creative spaces together and finally create three improvised short pieces.
To test the codes of the respective dance and music styles and to explore their adaptability in a new context, the selected artists will engage in two public workshops on Lighting and Dramaturgy. These sessions will provide them with valuable insights and tools to infuse their performances with newfound depth and creativity.
Following the workshops, artists will be grouped into three interdisciplinary teams comprising dancers and musicians/DJs. Each team will be tasked with creating an improvised short piece within a few hours, drawing from their newly gained insights of the workshops alongside their own artistic visions. For this process, Flavourama’s artistic directors Farah Deen and Olivia Mitterhuemer will guide the groups with their choreographic and improvisational knowledge as outside eyes.
No limits are set on the performative playground and we are curious to see the outcome of this year’s Flavourama Performatory!

Schedule:
The day (Sept. 5th) will start for all artists at 10:00 am with a workshop on “Basics in Lighting” led by Gunther Seiser. Diving deeper into the spheres of performance creation and what it takes to create a theater performance, participants will gain insights into the technical aspects of theater equipment, learn about the nuances of spotlights and their placement, explore the significance of colours and use of cue-lists. Our aim is to equip participants with a comprehensive understanding of lighting possibilities in theater spaces and familiarize them with essential technical vocabulary.
Led by Imani Rameses, the second workshop will provide an “Introduction into Dramaturgy”. Participants will be taking a deep dive into the basic building blocks of any creative process using Mary Overlie’s Six Viewpoints aka the SSTEMS: Space, Shape, Time, Emotions, Movement, and Story. The Six Viewpoints is a method that teaches how to look at one idea from many perspectives. The aim of this workshop is to walk away with practical tools for developing next creative endeavors.

After a lunch break, the three spontaneously assembled groups consisting of musicians/DJs and dancers will be given time to experiment together in the studio and develop a score for their later improvised performance – coached by the artistic directors of the festival, Farah Deen and Olivia Mitterhuemer.
Niki Awandee will be the host of the evening and will round up the night with a panel discussion with all performing artists on stage. In this moment, the audience will be able to ask questions to the performers and vice versa. Like that a vivid exchange should be provided for these testing grounds.
