Interdisciplinary Choreographic Lab with Zornitsa Stoyanova (US/BG)

The lab introduces Polyphonic Dance — Zornitsa’s own method of instant composition and performance-making, developed through her artistic research and published academic work. Building upon her studies with Deborah Hay and Jeanine Durning, Zornitsa expands improvisation into a many-layered practice, where the body, voice, language, sensation, humor, memory, desire, politics, and imagination become active materials for creating performance.

This is a practice for artists interested in how meaning is made live: through movement, through speaking, through singing, through relation, through the accident of the moment, through what the body knows before it has been organized into explanation.

Morning Lab: Polyphonic Dance
10:00–13:00
Polyphonic Dance as a method for improvisation, devising, and live composition.
We will work with scores that combine instant movement, spoken text, voice, song, rhythm, attention, and embodied thinking. We will practice speaking while dancing, sounding without needing to “sing well,” tracking sensation, following impulse, and composing with multiple layers at once.

Polyphonic Dance treats meaning-making as a choreographic act. It asks how performance can hold contradiction, pleasure, awkwardness, vulnerability, humor, feminist politics, and personal truth without reducing them into one clear message too quickly.

Afternoon Lab: Future Love
14:00–17:00
We will enter the early research process for Future Love, Zornitsa’s new performance project about love, intimacy, desire, and human connection in an AI-littered world.

Using movement, text, voice, image-making, improvisation, and group composition, participants will generate material for a new interdisciplinary performance. We will use a Mylar inflatable sculpture and live feed special effects as materials in our exploration. We will play, write text, and experiment with technology, image, and text. Public showing 13 Jun
