As rehearsal director you are giving the daily contemporary dance training to the dance ensemble, prepare & run rehearsals, assist the choreographer, organise the guest teachers and shape internal processes and the external perception of dance in the center of Germany.

This is who we are:
Dance and its ensemble at the Stadttheater Gießen see themselves as a platform for diverse contemporary stage languages that place the body at the centre of their work. Time and again, traditional genre boundaries are crossed. The works of Artistic Director Constantin Hochkeppel, in particular, see themselves as devised theatre pieces that are dedicated to current themes using the interdisciplinary means of physical theatre. Together with international guest choreographers, the dance ensemble develops around four world premieres per season. In addition, collaborations with other institutions give the dancers the freedom to develop their own works. The international ensemble consists of 9 dancers between the age of 25 – 50 years, whose individual artistic personalities characterise all productions both aesthetically and in terms of content.
These are your tasks:
– Carrying out the regular morning contemporary dance training sessions and warm-ups before the performances
– Organisation of guest trainers (budgeting, contacting, support)
– In consultation with the choreographers: Preparation, management and follow-up of rehearsals, choreographic assistance
– Management of revival rehearsals (Wiederaufnahmeproben), possibly conception and realisation of physical introductions (introductory format for audience members)
– Evening direction
– Conceiving and organising workshops for external dance enthusiasts (together with the director)
– Developing your own ideas for the department and working together with the management to realise them
You should have:
– Teaching and Facilitation skills
– Experience in conceptualising contemporary dance classes for professional dancers for a long period of time (in the context of a professional dance company)
– Several years of experience as a contemporary dancer (and possibly physical theatre performer), preferably at a municipal theatre
– Experience as a rehearsal director, preferably at a municipal theatre
– Good network with dancers and choreographers in Germany & Europe
– Experience to work in a team and to cater to the needs of different parties (ensemble, management, etc.)
– Basic knowledge of the NV Bühne (SR Solo)
– Basic knowledge of the German and international dance & physical theatre scene
– Desire to implement a vision for dance at the Stadttheater Gießen together with the management of the department
– Desire to have a say and participate in the development and implementation of processes in the department and the theatre
– German language skills
– Charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent

– Part-time contract based on the NV Bühne (SR Solo) for the remainder of the 24/25 season (induction/handover: from 23/09/2024, start of employment: 01/10/2024)
– After evaluation of the collaboration in spring 2025: Option to extend in a regular NV Bühne contract from season 25/26

The procedure of the interview process:
Selected applicants will be invited to take part in an online meeting (June 2024).
Thereupon, successful applicants will be invited to a physical meeting (8. – 12.7.24). This meeting will include teaching one trial class to the ensemble and an interview with the artistic director.
The decision is based on the two meetings and will be made until the end of July 2024.
