StairCase.studio Brussels morning classes, advanced level with Luis Marrafa.
The classes are intended for professional dancers who have completed their dance studies and would like to continue their training and enrich their knowledge with an experienced professional who has created for various companies such as the National Ballet of Portugal and is now working with the Opera Ballet Vlaanderen.

from 10.00 to 11.30 (contemporary) and from 11.45 to 13.00 (composition)

Contemporary dance

The movement is supported by a layer of mechanical and organic processes that not only give rise to an abstraction movement of a structured discourse but also sketch a perspective between the functionality of the body and the effect of the technical application “dance technique”. The music in relation with Movement – Phenomena that complete each other, has an essential aspect in his working process.

Choreographic Composition

During the class the dancers are encouraged to explore movements that relate to the chosen theme. They are stimulated to experiment, improvise and collaborate with each other, contributing their own ideas and movements to the choreography. As the class progresses, Luis Marrafa will give feedback, suggestions and direction, The class culminates in a presentation or sharing of the choreography created by the dancers.

BIO Luis Marrafa

Luis Marrafa was born in 1975 in Schüttorf, Germany. At the age of 9, he moved to Évora, Portugal, and later to Lisbon. He continued his journey to London, before settling in Brussels in 2009. He is a graduate of Lisbon’s Escola Superior de Dança and currently he is the artistic director of the Marrafa dance company and StairCase.studio Brussels, where he is also the artistic curator. As a choreographer, performer, teacher and sound composer, his creations draw inspiration from his life experiences and the cultural diversity that surrounds him. The latest works he created were “Snow” for the National Ballet of Portugal, “CREDO” for the Cultural Association ArQuente and “Ghost”. Currently collaborating with Alain Platel for the Opera Ballet Vlaanderen for the project “Ombra”.

Some of his achievements include “Ghost,” which was recognized as one of Portugal’s top 10 dance pieces of 2021 and “HOME” selected by Aerowaves twenty company in 2016. He has received nominations for “ABSTAND” and has won the award for Best Performance at the International InShadow Festival in Lisbon in 2012 for “Untitled.” Luis Marrafa has also collaborated with renowned artists like Alain Platel, Rui Horta, Karine Ponties, Tânia Carvalho, among others.
