An intensive two-day workshop, taught by Russell Maliphant. Suitable for professional dancers, or those in their final year of training, aged 18+.
Where: The Russell Maliphant Studio, 93A Scrubs Lane, London NW10 6QU, UK
When: Saturday 26 – Sunday 27 May 2018
10 AM – 5 PM each day
Taught by Artistic Director Russell Maliphant, this intensive two-day workshop will be an exploration of ideas and movement that draw on Maliphant’s training in bodywork, particularly as a practitioner of the Rolfing Method of Structural Integration, and other movement practices including classical ballet, yoga and martial arts as explored in his own choreographic work.
Maliphant will connect ideas and scientific findings to aesthetics within the physical world of movement. The workshop will introduce principles and theoretical models of Fascia, Tensegrity, and Structural Integration, which may enhance health, longevity in physical practice, and structural balance. With their inherent rules and qualities, these systems will be explored in relation to line (in posture, sculpture and dance), quality of movement, shape and form.
Maliphant will focus on practical ways to explore fascia and tensegrity in movement, particularly in relationship to gravity, breath and quality of movement. Exercises will look at positional strategies in different movement regimes which could be applied to techniques that participants are already aware of, or which may affect qualities such as shape, flow and dynamics. An emphasis will be given to awareness, proprioception, refinement and mindfulness through releasing ‘holding patterns’ and cultivating a full body perception with a high level of kinaesthetic acuity.
About Russell Maliphant and Russell Malpihant Company:
Maliphant’s work is noted for its sculptural qualities and flow of movement. Though his initial idiom has a foundation in classical dance, he has explored contemporary movement for more than 30 years. He integrates qualities informed by his studies in Tai Chi, yoga, capoeira and contact improvisation in his choreographies, creating his own particular artistic language through the interaction with light and music. He is an experienced practitioner of the Rolfing method of Structural Integration.
Russell Maliphant Company was established in 1996 as the framework for Maliphant to initiate productions and to work with his own ensemble of dancers. Since that time, he has received 2 Olivier awards, 2 South Bank Show awards and 3 Critics’ Circle National Dance awards for best modern choreography, amongst many other national and international awards and nominations. Maliphant is an Associate Artist with Sadler’s Wells.
In April 2018, the Russell Maliphant Company became one of Arts Council England’s National Portfolio Organisations. This brings an exciting new chapter to the companies’ history, becoming Company in Residence at DanceEast, Ipswich.
