Urbanity Dance is hosting auditions for our professional Company for the 2018-2019 season. We are seeking male and female dancers with diverse movement backgrounds and a variety of skills.
Where: South End studio, Boston, US
When: Saturday, April 7th from 4-6pm
The audition works as a class, including ballet tendu, pirouettes, a modern release combo, leaps across the floor, improvisation exercises and a final combination. The combo will highlight Urbanity’s style, weaving fluid release “gooey” technique, with the ability to fiercely hit notes of choreography with specificity and attack. We’re looking for wow-factor appeal and open-minded willingness to create. Those who are asked to attend callbacks may be asked to learn additional phrase work, and/or perform a 1-2 minute solo. Please bring music and prepare ahead of time.
How To Apply:
We suggest letting us know you’re planning to attend ahead of time. Email photo and bio or resume to Cayley at firstname.lastname@example.org. No audition videos in lieu of a live audition will be accepted for the Company.
About the Company:
Urbanity Dance is currently Boston’s second largest dance company. The Company’s hyper-athletic aesthetic is a true fusion, aiming to bridge the gap between concert and commercial dance. Known for its effortless curves and use of breath, Urbanity places a strong emphasis on the foundations of modern, jazz, and ballet, while also utilizing the highly detailed gesture work and hard-hitting articulation usually associated with hip-hop. Originally an all-female company, Urbanity added men to its ranks for the first time in 2014. Appreciating the attendance of live dance as a generous act in the mediated 21st century, the Company values high artistic integrity. Since its founding, Urbanity Dance has grown tremendously. The Company was voted Boston’s Best by Improper Bostonian in 2013, announced Best of Boston by Boston Magazine in 2015, recently shortlisted for Bostinno’s 50 on Fire, and named a Top Ten Critics’ Pick by The Boston Globe. Urbanity has presented at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, The Alvin Ailey Citigroup Theater, The Institute of Contemporary Art, and venues across New England, New York, Virginia, Texas and Florida.
Company classes and rehearsals are September through May on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursday and Fridays from 10am-2pm.
All company dancers are paid for rehearsals and performances. Pay for the season is $5,000-$8,000.
Free classes with master teachers. Company class four days a week, plus free access to any open class at Urbanity.
Opportunities to work with nationally recognized choreographers.
Opportunities to choreograph and produce their own work, with choreographic mentorship from Boston veterans.
A chance to build your photo/video portfolio, and work with professional photographers.
Dancers receive an additional $50 monthly health reimbursement.
What is Urbanity’s style?
The artists in the company influence the choreography, and we are currently seeking a new dancer who may offer a fresh perspective. We are looking for artists who have a diverse range, can move lyrically, yet have the ability to fiercely hit notes of choreography with specificity and attack. Elements of ballet, modern, jazz, hip-hop, sports, and world styles are integrated. Experience with improvisation, acro, and partnering are a plus. We’re looking for wow-factor, appeal, and above all, an open-minded willingness to create.
