Arranging Movement in Film – Online Workshop on Film-Choreography. Based on a simple score we will conceive and realize a small film-choreography that explores specific tools on how to relate physical movement and the camera eye, on how to create rhythm and tension by playing with stasis and motion.
The workshop is part of the Athens Video Dance Project.

Where: Online

When: December 10, 2022, 10 am – 4 pm (CET)

Movement seems to be the crucial common point between choreography and cinematography. But how can physical and cinematic movements be arranged, composed, and interwoven with each other?

If we define choreography as the organization of bodies in time and space, we can ask ourselves which choreographic possibilities open up when bodies, time and space themselves become movable objects in a cinematic world. In the first part of the workshop we will have a deeper look into theoretical and historical aspects of the hybrid art form. We will discover the various methods and strategies which can be used to connect dance and film through a close and precise study of selected dance films.

In the second part of the class we will transfer the collected knowledge into practice. Based on a score each participant will conceive and realize a small film-choreographic study that explores specific tools on how to relate physical movement and the camera eye, on how to create rhythm and tension by playing with stasis and motion.

The aim of the workshop is to provide conceptual knowledge on the hybrid film format, and to support the participants in the development and enhancement of their own ideas for dance films. It serves as a platform for inspiration and intense exchange and encourages the participants to sharpen their own artistic approach.

The class is a spin-off of a more comprehensive workshop I offer regularly, both online and on-site.
