In 2016, Yiddish Summer Weimar, an internationally renowned summer festival, will host the creation of a contemporary dance production based on Yiddish traditional dance.
Where: Weimar, Germany
When: July 21 – August 6, 2016
Deadline for application: March 20th
“GILGUL – TRANSFORMATION” will be choreographed by Steven Lee Weintraub (Philadelphia), a leading international teacher of traditional Yiddish dance as well as contemporary choreographer. The original, live music will be composed by Zilien Biret and Ilya Shneyveys, drawing on klezmer, New Jewish Music, Radical Jewish Music and beyond. We seek trained dancers of a variety of ages and backgrounds for a project that picks up and re-interprets the broken thread of an Eastern European, modernist Yiddish dance tradition that ended with the Holocaust. This is a rare opportunity to help create a pioneering, new work of choreography with a cultural meaning that bridges the early 20th and 21st centuries. Interested? Then, please go to: www.yiddishsummer.eu or www.gilgul.eu and find out about the audition process. Application deadline is March 1st, 2016.
We are offering free board and lodging as well as a compensation for travel expenses inside Europe. After its premiere in Weimar, Gilgul is planned to go on tour, which would offer opportunities to earn money for all participating artists. We’ve already received promising feedback from several other festivals and partners.
