The Diploma in Movement Arts and Mixed Media has now gained considerable popularity as a one-of-its-kind course in India and is currently in its 11th year. The programme which was offered as a one-year certificate course until 2015 has now introduced the second year. Eventually this 2 year diploma programme will be converted into a three year bachelor’s degree in movement arts and mixed media. However, the students still have the option of doing it as a one-year certificate course if preferred. It is a full-time programme from 8 am to 5.30 pm – Monday through Friday. The Academic year is from September to August, which will culminate in a grand public graduation performance every August.
In the first year, the students are trained in Contemporary Dance, Classical Ballet, Bharatanatyam (Indian Classical dance) and Kalaripayattu (Indian martial art form) along with shorter modules of other movement art forms from the country and stage technologies. They have brief modules in Art History and Dance Humanities as well.
The Second year will involve training in advanced techniques in the aforementioned forms along with Contextual studies like Dance Therapy, Dance Pedagogy, Arts Management, Dance Theory and Aesthetics. The students will also choose a major subject area – Performance, Choreography or Interdisciplinary Studies – and their final project / thesis / presentation would be in this specialization. The students will also get on the job training in teaching / performing through Attakkalari’s outreach programmes.
How to apply: Send a short video of you dancing in any style to firstname.lastname@example.org along with a brief background about your training in dance or any other movement art form. We are also planning to host auditions in Italy in the month of June as the Repertory Company is performing and facilitating workshops in different places across Italy throughout the month of June. Attakkalari’s audition process lays emphasis on assessing the participant’s physical awareness, overall coordination, strength, speed, flexibility, musicality and a sense of rhythm and space, comprehension, and most importantly, ability to imagine and be creative.
Programme fee: 3,500 € per year. Does not include accommodation or food.
