Deggi Daaj International is a two-week fellowship that invites a select group of 4 international drumset artists and 4 international dancers to Dakar, Senegal for a comprehensive cultural immersion within the framework of Sabar rhythm science.
Deadline for application: June 20th
Where: Dakar, Senegal
When: July 16th – August 2nd
Two young professional Dakar drumset artists and two professional dancers will complete the ensemble: a 6-drumset orchestra and 6-dancer team, accompanied by traditional Sabar drummers at all times. The exchange is comprised of a week of workshop rehearsals in an open doors setting, welcoming dancing and drumming Senegalese youth of both genders to observe and join-in as well, followed by a 2nd week of diverse performances across all classes of Dakar society, with opportunities for cultural excursions and independent research. The fellowship culminates with collaborative performances alongside master Sabar drummer and formally designated UNESCO Living Human Treasure Doudou Ndiaye Rose, on the spectacular occasion of his 85th birthday.
We are welcoming submissions from young professionals and advanced students who are interested in engaging deeply and creatively with the culture of Sabar dance & rhythm science, as opposed to simply learning the steps— Dancers who bring their own stylistic background to alchemize with Sabar. A passion for improvisation and conscious synergy with live music will provide the ideal foundation with which to take advantage of this unique opportunity. The traits of humbleness & patience, and a calling toward growth & self-actualization, are also essential to any first visit to sub-Saharan Africa.
